Almost Giving Up, Then Finding a Better Path

An independent filmmaker finds a new path forward while editing the White Wolf trailer at dawn.

I am not going to pretend the failed Kickstarter did not hit me.

It did.

After all the work, all the posts, all the trailers, all the updates, all the hope, and all the late nights building White Wolf one clip at a time, watching the campaign fall short was rough.

For a little while, I wanted to give up.

Not forever, maybe. But enough that I started asking the questions every creator hates asking.

Was this not as good of an idea as I thought? Was I too close to it? Did I overestimate how much people would care? Did I mistake my own belief in the story for momentum that was not actually there?

Those are not fun questions.

The hard truth

YouTube and social media did not help me build the community or fanbase around this idea the way I hoped they would.

That is not me blaming anyone. That is just the truth of where things landed. The story connected with some people, and I am grateful for every single person who followed, shared, backed, commented, or simply paid attention. But it did not create enough momentum to carry the Kickstarter across the line.

So I had to sit with that for a minute.

And yes, there was a point where I thought maybe the whole plan was wrong.

Then the plan changed

The idea that helped me breathe again was simple: go trailer category first.

Instead of forcing the full feature into festivals before I have the time and funds to finish it properly, I can build the strongest trailer possible and submit that first.

That gives White Wolf a chance to be seen, judged, and hopefully talked about without me rushing the full-length cut before it is truly ready.

If the trailer gets some traction, then the feature can follow later in 2027 with a better foundation behind it. More time. Better finishing. Better sound. Better color. A cleaner edit. A stronger final product.

Maybe festivals are the better audience

Maybe social media was not the right place to build this from zero.

Maybe the better audience for White Wolf is the festival circuit: people who already want to discover independent films, unusual production stories, proof-of-concept work, and filmmakers trying to do something different with the tools available to them.

Maybe festival word-of-mouth can do what the algorithm did not.

I do not know that yet.

But I know this path feels better.

It feels calmer. Smarter. More realistic. Less like throwing the whole movie into the world and hoping the internet suddenly decides to care.

The film is still alive

The Kickstarter failed.

The film did not.

The plan changed, and honestly, I feel better about it now than I did when I was trying to force the old plan to work.

The trailer comes first. The feature comes later. The story keeps moving.

The path changed. The film did not.
